Physical Education and Sport

Intent

We deliver a high-quality Physical Education (PE) curriculum that inspires all pupils to achieve their best by providing opportunities for them to become physically confident, while supporting their overall health and fitness.

Our vision is to engage every pupil in sustained physical activity, help build their stamina as well as character, and embed lifelong values such as fairness and respect. We aim to develop their competence across a broad range of sports and offer opportunities to compete both within the school and against other schools.

In alignment with the National Curriculum for physical education, our programme is designed to enable pupils to:

  • Develop competence to excel in a broad range of physical activities

  • Be physically active for sustained periods of time

  • Engage and participate in competitive sports and activities

  • Lead healthy lifestyles and active lives.

Implementation

At Rutherford House, pupils take part in weekly high-quality PE lessons and sporting activities. Our PE programme incorporates a wide variety of sports to ensure all children develop confidence, tolerance, and an appreciation of their own strengths and weaknesses, as well as those of others. We provide a range of extra-curricular opportunities before, during, and after school, alongside competitive sporting events. This inclusive approach encourages not only physical development but also promotes well-being.

Impact

Our curriculum seeks to improve the well-being and fitness of all children not only through the physical skills taught but also through the values and disciplines PE promotes. Within lessons, children learn self-discipline and understand that success requires taking ownership and responsibility for their own health and fitness. Our ultimate impact is to motivate children to apply these skills independently and effectively, empowering them to live happy, healthy lives.
